24 Oktober 2015. Misi Gempur Denggi SK. Kukusan kali ini bertempat di kompleks membeli-belah Eastern Plaza, Tawau, Sabah. Misi disertai oleh pelajar, guru dan anggota Jabatan Kesihatan Tawau. Misi kali ini berusaha mengumpul sebanyak mungkin tandatangan daripada pengunjung kompleks sebagai tanda sokongan terhadap kempen 'Patrol Dengue' untuk menghapuskan aedes dan penyakit Demam Denggi disamping meningkatkan kesedaran orang rmai terhadap ancaman nyamuk aedes dan penyakit demam denggi. Dalam Misi tersebut juga, racun nyamuk turut diberikan kepada pengunjung. Racun nyamuk berkenaan adalah hasil sumbangan pihak yang prihatin terhadap penularan demam denggi. Tahniah kepada program 'Patrol Dengue' SK. Kukusan Tawau.

Sokongan Padu PPD Tawau Program Dengue Patrol

26 Oktober 2015. Skuad Misi Gempur Denggi SK. Kukusan meneruskan roadshow ke Pejabat Pendidikan Daerah Tawau (PPDT). Pegawai Pendidikan En. Darmansyah bersama-sama pegawai beliau telah menurunkan tanda tangan sokongan di atas 'banner' yang disediakan. Sesungguhnya, sokongan dan bantuan PPDT tidak dapat dinafikan dalam mempastikan Misi Gempur Denggi berjaya mencapai matlamatnya. Malah misi ini bermula dengan syor PPDT yang telah memberi kepercayaan kepada SK. Kukusan untuk menyertai misi ini diperingkat kebangsaan. Di samping itu, perjalanan aktiviti 'Dengue Patrol Programme' banyak medapat nasihat daripada pegawai-pegawai PPDT. Terima kasih PPDT atas kepercayaan dan sokongan. Terima kasih warga pendidik Tawau!

Skuad Misi Gempur Denggi menyingsing lengan untuk menunjukkan tekad menghapuskan nyamuk aedes dan mencegah denggi sambil anggota skuad dengan bangganya menunjukkan gelang Misi Gempur Denggi di bawah 'Dengue Patrol Programme'.

Sesi temuramah turut dilakukan bersama Ketua Unit Kemanusiaan PPDT untuk mendapatkan pandangan beliau tentang pendekatan yang dilakukan oleh skuad Misi Gempur Denggi Sk. Kukusan

Brazil releases 'good' mosquitoes to fight dengue fever!!!

Brazilian researchers in Rio de Janeiro have released thousands of mosquitoes infected with bacteria that suppress dengue fever.

The hope is they will multiply, breed and become the majority of mosquitoes, thus reducing cases of the disease.

The initiative is part of a programme also taking place in Australia, Vietnam and Indonesia.

The intracellular bacteria, Wolbachia, being introduced cannot be transmitted to humans.

The programme started in 2012 says Luciano Moreira of the Brazilian research institute Fiocruz, who is leading the project in Brazil .

"Our teams performed weekly visits to the four neighbourhoods in Rio being targeted. Mosquitoes were analysed after collection in special traps.

"Transparency and proper information for the households is a priority. "

Ten thousand mosquitoes will be released each month for four months with the first release in Tubiacanga, in the north of Rio.

'Good' bacteria

 

The bacterium Wolbachia is found in 60% of insects. It acts like a vaccine for the mosquito which carries dengue, Aedes aegypti, stopping the dengue virus multiplying in its body.

Wolbachia also has an effect on reproduction. If a contaminated male fertilises the eggs of a female without the bacteria, these eggs do not turn into larvae.

If the male and female are contaminated or if only a female has the bacteria, all future generations of mosquito will carry Wolbachia.

As a result, Aedes mosquitoes with Wolbachia become predominant without researchers having to constantly release more contaminated insects.

In Australia this happened within 10 weeks on average.

The research on Wolbachia began at the University of Monash in Australia in 2008. The researchers allowed the mosquitoes to feed on their own arms for five years because of concerns at the time Wolbachia could infect humans and domestic animals.

Three more neighbourhoods will be targeted next, and large scale studies to evaluate the effect of the strategy are planned for 2016.

Dengue re-emerged in Brazil in 1981 after an absence of more than 20 years.

Over the next 30 years, seven million cases were reported.

Brazil leads the world in the number of dengue cases, with 3.2 million cases and 800 deaths reported in the 2009-14 period.

Destroy aedes breeding ground

KOTA KINABALU: People should ensure that Aedes mosquitoes have no chance to breed indoors or outdoors. State Health Department entomologist Adleen Shareeza Ahmad Puad said they can breed in both indoor and outdoor so long they have clear and stagnant waters.

She said people ought to do their part to destroy the aedes breeding ground in their house compound. They can do so by taking part in the Health Department campaign called ‘Spare 10 Minutes’ to do a cleaning up exercise on their own houses during the weekend. According to her, fogging will only killed the adult mosquitoes but not the larva as they will emerge again in few days. But people always request for the Health Department, City Hall or pest controllers to do the fogging and yet sometimes they don’t allow us to go into their houses which make things complicated, she said. Kota Kinabalu health officer cum public health specialist Dr Mohd Saffree Jaffree, said Taman Foo Yen has been marked as one of the hotspot of dengue cases in the city.

The situation now is under control ever since the Health Department launched the ‘Ops Mega Denggi 2015’ to go all out to combat the aedes mosquitoes. “The other areas are still prevalent where the transmission of the virus are very active especially those areas which had very poor waste disposal system, sanitation, water problems such as Sembulan, Likas, Tanjung Aru and Kepayan,” Dr Saffree said. “We want the full cooperation from the public and local leaders to help us,” Dr Saffree called. He said the Health Department’s education unit has also focused their attention on school children such as teaching them to be an agent of change to their parents. “The main cause is not about the dry weather, mosquitoes is everywhere, dengue is the virus so in order to transmit the virus you need a vector called mosquitoes,” Dr Saffree explained. There are many types of mosquitoes but the main worries are the aedes mosquitoes which stayed inside the house, he said.

He said the spread of the dengue virus is a global issue and in Malaysia and Sabah the situation reached its height in mid-December 2014. The Sabah, he said Kota Kinabalu is leading in the number of dengue cases reported. In the whole country, Selangor is now top in dengue cases.- Sayangsabah
